Banbridge is on the A1 Belfast to Newry and Dublin road, and its bypass was used by about 30,000 drivers a day in 2018, according to the Department for Infrastructure. This guide covers the A1 and its planned safety scheme, local work, the two nearest hospitals and the courts.
Start your free case reviewIn the Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon policing district, 5 people killed, 129 were seriously injured and 703 slightly injured on the roads in 2025, according to PSNI figures for 2025. In 2018 the Department for Infrastructure added a central safety barrier to the A1 Banbridge Bypass and closed all the crossing points in its central reserve.
South of the town, the A1 between Loughbrickland and Newry carried about 27,500 vehicles a day in 2024, 14% of them heavy goods vehicles. A larger safety scheme for 25km of the A1 between Hillsborough and Loughbrickland would close nine minor junctions and about 100 central reserve gaps and add four flyover junctions, with a new northbound on-slip at Castlewellan Road in Banbridge.
That scheme was delayed while the A5 road case was before the Court of Appeal, which ruled on 6 October 2026. Read how car and road accident claims work.
Yes, if your employer, or someone else at work, was at fault. Banbridge has offsite construction manufacturing, where parts of buildings, such as plant rooms and pipework modules, are built in a factory and delivered to sites.
Moving large modules around a factory and on to lorries involves lifting equipment and heavy loads. The Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations (Northern Ireland) 1999 govern that work, and a breach can support a claim.

Most claims settle without a court hearing. If yours goes to court, claims worth up to £30,000 are currently heard in the County Court, and civil claims from Banbridge are usually listed at Armagh Courthouse on The Mall. Larger claims go to the High Court at the Royal Courts of Justice in Belfast.
Banbridge Courthouse was brought back into use in 2021 for benefits appeals and inquests. County Court queries from the town go to the court office in Armagh.
Banbridge has no emergency department or minor injury unit. Craigavon Area Hospital in Portadown and Daisy Hill Hospital in Newry both have 24-hour emergency departments, and both are around 13 to 14 miles away. Daisy Hill is the quicker drive in clear traffic, down the A1. Check current waiting times on nidirect.
Both hospitals are run by the Southern Health and Social Care Trust, which holds the records. With your permission, we request them for you, as a medical record made soon after the accident is useful evidence.
No. Our Belfast office, at 7 Donegall Square West, is about 25 miles up the A1 from Banbridge, around 35 minutes by car. Most claims can be handled by phone, email or video.
Yes. If the driver pulled out when it wasn't safe, the claim is made against their insurer. Emerging from a minor road without care was the third most common main cause of injury collisions in Northern Ireland in 2025, with 409, according to PSNI figures. Gaps and junctions like these are what the planned A1 safety scheme between Hillsborough and Loughbrickland is meant to close.
If another driver caused the crash, the claim is against their insurer. If you were a passenger in a works vehicle driven by a colleague, or the vehicle your employer gave you was faulty, the claim may be against your employer's insurer. Report the crash to your employer and keep a copy of any accident report.
Possibly. If the driver can't be traced, a claim can be made to the Motor Insurers' Bureau, which covers the whole UK, including Northern Ireland. Report the collision to the PSNI as soon as you can, and write down anything you remember about the vehicle.
You usually have three years from the date of the accident, or from when you first knew you were injured, if that is later. For a child, the three years start on their 18th birthday. It is still best to get advice early, while evidence such as CCTV and witness details is available.
No. There are no upfront fees. If your claim succeeds, the other side pays your legal costs and you keep 100% of your compensation. If it doesn't, our legal insurance covers the costs. Read how funding works.
