You can still claim if the driver who hit you drove off and can't be traced. The claim goes through the Motor Insurers' Bureau, and we handle it for you with no upfront fees.
A hit and run claim is a claim for compensation when the driver who caused your injury leaves the scene and can't be traced. You can claim whether you were a driver, passenger, cyclist or pedestrian.
The Motor Insurers' Bureau (MIB) compensates people injured by untraced drivers in Northern Ireland. It does this under an agreement with the Department for Infrastructure, renewed in December 2023.
The MIB looks at the evidence, assesses your injury and pays compensation if the claim meets the conditions of the agreement.
If anyone was injured, the crash must be reported to the PSNI as soon as you reasonably can. A police report is also one of the conditions for an MIB claim.
Keep the police reference number, and write down anything you remember about the vehicle: its colour, make or part of the registration.
Most injury claims must be started within three years of the accident, under the Limitation (Northern Ireland) Order 1989. MIB claims have conditions and deadlines of their own, so it's best to get advice early.

Depending on the severity of the collision, you may suffer:
Always seek medical advice after an accident, even if symptoms seem minor at first.
You pay nothing to start your claim and nothing while it runs.
We only handle personal injury and clinical negligence claims, from first advice through to court if it comes to that.
If your claim succeeds, the other side pays your legal costs and you keep 100% of your compensation.
Our legal insurance covers the costs if your claim doesn't succeed.
We'll look at what happened and tell you honestly whether you have a claim. There's no pressure to go ahead.
Road traffic claims are run by Paul Kearney, a solicitor advocate and former barrister, with trainee solicitor John Deeney.
We help clients across Northern Ireland, in person or by phone, email or video.
