Newry sits on the A1 Belfast to Dublin corridor, and the A1/N1 crossing at Jonesborough is one of 15 border crossings where a record 48.3 million vehicles were counted in 2023. This guide covers local roads, work at the port, Daisy Hill Hospital and cross-border claims.
Start your free case reviewIn the Newry, Mourne and Down policing district, 7 people killed, 134 were seriously injured and 660 slightly injured on the roads in 2025, according to PSNI figures for 2025. The A1 at Newry, north of its junction with the A27, carried about 25,000 vehicles a day in 2024, and more than one in eight were heavy goods vehicles.
Lorries for Warrenpoint Harbour add to congestion in Newry, and the A2 Warrenpoint Road carried about 15,000 vehicles a day in 2024. The proposed Newry Southern Relief Road, at £110m to £130m, would link the A1 to the A2 and take traffic away from the city centre, with road safety among its aims. Its draft orders went on public exhibition in early 2025, according to the Department for Infrastructure.

Yes, if your employer, or someone else at work, was at fault. The port at Warrenpoint handled 11.6% of Northern Ireland's port tonnage in 2024. Work around Newry also includes food manufacturing, pharmaceuticals and specialist fit-out work.
At the port, people are hurt by moving vehicles, lifting gear and falling loads, and the Docks Regulations (Northern Ireland) 1989 set rules for that work. In factories and fit-out workshops the risks are more often machinery and manual handling. A breach of the regulations can support a claim.

Most claims settle without a court hearing. If yours goes to court, claims worth up to £30,000 are currently heard in the County Court, and civil claims from the Newry area are usually listed at Armagh Courthouse on The Mall. Larger claims go to the High Court at the Royal Courts of Justice in Belfast.
A claim for a crash on the other side of the border is dealt with in the Republic instead.
Daisy Hill Hospital, on Hospital Road in Newry, has a 24-hour emergency department, and all patients go to the main emergency department reception. Emergency nurse practitioners there treat minor injuries. Check current waiting times on nidirect.
Your records are held by the Southern Health and Social Care Trust, and with your permission we request them for you. The Trust usually treats a request for medical records as complex, which gives it up to 90 days to reply, so it helps to start early.
No. Our Belfast office, at 7 Donegall Square West, is about 40 miles from Newry, around 50 minutes by car. Most claims can be handled by phone, email or video.
The car's insurer, and the claim is made here in Northern Ireland because that is where the crash happened. The Motor Insurers' Bureau treats an Irish-registered car as a foreign vehicle and can trace the insurer from the registration number. Each foreign insurer has a representative in the UK who deals with the claim. If you can, take the driver's Green Card number at the scene, or at least the registration.
Yes, through our practice in the Republic. A crash there is claimed in the Republic, against the driver's insurer, and most injury claims must go to the Injuries Resolution Board before they can go to court. The time limit is usually two years from the accident, a year shorter than in Northern Ireland. Paul Kearney is qualified in both jurisdictions, and Kearney Law handles claims in the Republic through kearneylaw.ie.
Yes. A claim for an accident in Northern Ireland is made here, under Northern Ireland law, wherever you live. That applies to a crash on the A1 or in the city, and to an injury at work in the area.
You usually have three years from the date of an accident in Northern Ireland, or from when you first knew you were injured, if that is later. For a child, the three years start on their 18th birthday. Accidents in the Republic usually have a shorter, two-year limit.
No. There are no upfront fees. If your claim succeeds, the other side pays your legal costs and you keep 100% of your compensation. If it doesn't, our legal insurance covers the costs. Read how funding works.
