Larne handled 14.7% of Northern Ireland's port tonnage in 2024, more than any port except Belfast, and the A8 dual carriageway links it to Belfast. This guide covers the roads, port and factory work, the nearest emergency department and where a claim would be heard.
Start your free case reviewIn the Mid and East Antrim policing district, 2 people killed, 71 were seriously injured and 377 slightly injured on the roads in 2025, according to PSNI figures for 2025.
The A8 links Larne and its port to Belfast and was dualled in 2015. In 2024 it carried about 17,000 vehicles a day, and almost 15% of them were heavy goods vehicles, according to the Department for Infrastructure's counts.
The harbour handled 14.7% of Northern Ireland's port tonnage in 2024, second only to Belfast, and Northern Ireland's ports carried almost 939,000 road goods vehicles that year, according to NISRA. Read how car and road accident claims work.
Yes, if your employer, or someone else at work, was at fault. Larne's work includes the port, freight haulage and ferry work, quarrying, and manufacturing of power generation equipment.
On the quays, the risks come from lorries and trailers moving close to people, loads being lifted and falls from vehicles. The Docks Regulations (Northern Ireland) 1989 apply to work at the port, and a breach can support a claim.

Most claims settle without a court hearing. If yours goes to court, claims worth up to £30,000 are currently heard in the County Court for the North Eastern division, which covers the Mid and East Antrim council area. Larger claims go to the High Court at the Royal Courts of Justice in Belfast.
Larne's own courthouse closed in 2013, so no claim is heard in the town itself.
Larne has no emergency department. The nearest 24-hour emergency department is at Antrim Area Hospital, about 21 miles away, which also has a minor injuries unit. Check current waiting times on nidirect.
Antrim Area Hospital is run by the Northern Health and Social Care Trust, which holds the records. With your permission, we request them for you, as a medical record made soon after the accident is useful evidence.
No, but you can. Our Belfast office at 7 Donegall Square West is about 25 miles from Larne, around 30 minutes by car on the A8. Most claims can also be handled by phone, email or video.
Moyle Hospital on Gloucester Avenue is run by the Northern Health and Social Care Trust, but the Trust does not list an emergency department or minor injuries unit there. For an injury that needs treating straight away, the nearest 24-hour emergency department is at Antrim Area Hospital. If you see your GP instead, tell them how the injury happened so it goes in your record.
Yes. A crash in Northern Ireland is claimed here, against the lorry's insurer, wherever the driver or haulier is based. If the lorry is registered outside the UK, the Motor Insurers' Bureau can trace the insurer from the registration number, and foreign insurers have a representative to deal with claims. Note the registration and any company name on the cab or trailer.
It depends who controlled the work. Your employer is responsible for your safety, but if the port's equipment or staff, or another driver on the quay, caused the injury, the claim may be against them instead. Report the accident at the port and to your employer, and note who was there.
You usually have three years from the date of the accident, or from when you first knew you were injured, if that is later. For a child, the three years start on their 18th birthday. It is still best to get advice early, while evidence such as CCTV and witness details is available.
No. There are no upfront fees. If your claim succeeds, the other side pays your legal costs and you keep 100% of your compensation. If it doesn't, our legal insurance covers the costs. Read how funding works.
