Quarrying and precast concrete are among the main industries around Magherafelt, and the A6 nearby carries about 17,000 vehicles a day. This guide covers those roads and workplaces, Mid Ulster Hospital and where a claim from the town would be heard.
Start your free case reviewIn the Mid Ulster policing district, 9 people killed, 92 were seriously injured and 483 slightly injured on the roads in 2025, according to PSNI figures for 2025. That was the highest number of road deaths of any district in Northern Ireland.
The A31 bypass, 6 km of new road opened in 2016, was built to take up to 50,000 vehicles a week out of the town centre, according to the Department for Infrastructure. In 2024 the A31 Moneymore Road carried about 7,000 vehicles a day.
The A6, which links Belfast and the North West, passes close by. Its stretch between Castledawson and Dungiven carried about 17,000 vehicles a day in 2024, and DfI has added an extra approach lane at Castledawson Roundabout. Read how car and road accident claims work.
Yes, if your employer, or someone else at work, was at fault. Quarrying and the manufacture of precast concrete and paving are major industries near Magherafelt, along with coating and fabrication work in the town.
Quarry and concrete work carries risks from heavy plant and vehicles, falling material and lifting heavy units. Quarries have their own rules in Northern Ireland, the Quarries Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2006, and a breach can support a claim.

Most claims settle without a court hearing. If yours goes to court, claims worth up to £30,000 are currently heard in the County Court for the Western division, which covers the Mid Ulster council area. Larger claims go to the High Court at the Royal Courts of Justice in Belfast.
Magherafelt's own courthouse is currently listed as closed, so no claim would be heard in the town.
Mid Ulster Hospital on Hospital Road has a minor injuries unit, but there is no emergency department in Magherafelt. The nearest 24-hour emergency department is at Antrim Area Hospital, about 20 miles away by the A6 and M22. Check current waiting times on nidirect.
Both hospitals are run by the Northern Health and Social Care Trust, which holds the records. With your permission, we request them for you, as a medical record made soon after the accident is useful evidence.
Magherafelt is almost halfway between our offices. Belfast is about 36 miles away, around 45 minutes by the A6 and M22, and Derry about 39 miles, around an hour on the A6. Most claims can be handled by phone, email or video, so you can choose whichever office suits you.
Yes. If the lorry driver caused the crash, or a load that wasn't secured fell onto the road or your car, the claim is usually against the lorry's insurer. Note the registration and any company name on the cab or trailer. Photograph any stone or debris on the road before it is cleared.
Yes, if you were working for someone else and the accident was caused by their failure to keep you safe, or by another worker. Farming accounted for 3 of the 19 work-related deaths recorded by the Health and Safety Executive for Northern Ireland in 2025/26. Write down what happened and who saw it, and get the injury checked and recorded, even if it seems minor at first.
Possibly. Photos of the scene, the vehicles and any marks on the road, dashcam footage and the police report can all show what happened. Report it to the PSNI as soon as you can, as a police record is useful evidence. If the other driver didn't stop and can't be traced, you may still be able to claim through the Motor Insurers' Bureau.
You usually have three years from the date of the accident, or from when you first knew you were injured, if that is later. For a child, the three years start on their 18th birthday. It is still best to get advice early, while evidence such as CCTV and witness details is available.
No. There are no upfront fees. If your claim succeeds, the other side pays your legal costs and you keep 100% of your compensation. If it doesn't, our legal insurance covers the costs. Read how funding works.
