Strabane sits on the A5 beside the N14 border crossing at Lifford, about 14 miles from our Derry office. This guide covers the roads through the town, local factory and farm work, the nearest emergency department at Altnagelvin and where a Strabane claim would be heard.
Start your free case reviewNo one was killed on the roads of the Derry City and Strabane policing district in 2025, but 60 people were seriously injured and 510 slightly injured, according to PSNI figures for 2025.
The A5 runs through the town on Victoria Road, and the Infrastructure Minister has called the A5 "the most dangerous road in Ireland". In 2024 the Department for Infrastructure resurfaced Victoria Road as part of a £1 million package of safety measures on the existing A5. The first phase of the new A5 dual carriageway, 55km from south of Strabane to near Ballygawley, was cleared by the Court of Appeal in October 2026.
Strabane is also a border town. The N14 at Lifford is one of 15 crossing points where Transport Infrastructure Ireland counted a record 48.3 million vehicle crossings in 2023. Read how car and road accident claims work.
Yes, if your employer, or someone else at work, was at fault. Work in and around Strabane includes modular building manufacturing and farming across west Tyrone.
Factory work brings machinery and heavy loads, and farm work brings falls. HSENI says 14 people died after a fall while working on a farm in the last ten years. The Work at Height Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2005 set the rules for work on roofs, ladders and raised platforms, and a breach can support a claim.

Most claims settle without a court hearing. If yours goes to court, claims worth up to £30,000 are currently heard in the County Court. Strabane Courthouse on Derry Road lists County Court sittings, but civil claims from the area are usually heard at Omagh Courthouse. Larger claims go to the High Court at the Royal Courts of Justice in Belfast.
The nearest emergency department to Strabane is at Altnagelvin Area Hospital in Derry, about 14 miles away. It is open 24 hours and takes major trauma patients from across the west of Northern Ireland. Check current waiting times on nidirect.
Hospital records are held by the Western Health and Social Care Trust. With your permission, we request them for you, and the Trust usually has one month to reply.
No. Our nearest office is at 26-28 Bishop Street in Derry, about 14 miles from Strabane, around 25 minutes by car. Most claims can be handled by phone, email or video.
The other driver's insurer, and the claim is made here in Northern Ireland, because that is where the crash happened. The insurer will have a claims representative in the UK. If you only got the registration number, the Motor Insurers' Bureau can find the insurer from it. If you can, also ask the driver for their Green Card number at the scene.
Yes, but the claim runs under the Republic's rules. It is made against the driver's insurer there, and most personal injury claims must first go to the Injuries Resolution Board, which was called PIAB until December 2023. You usually have two years to claim, not three. Paul Kearney is qualified on both sides of the border, and our Republic practice, Kearney Law, handles these claims through kearneylaw.ie.
In Northern Ireland. Where you live doesn't decide it: an accident at a Strabane workplace is claimed here, under Northern Ireland law and its three-year time limit. Report the accident at work and keep a note of who saw it. We can handle the claim by phone, email or video, so you don't need to cross the border to see us.
You usually have three years from the date of an accident in Northern Ireland, or from when you first knew you were injured, if that is later. For a child, the three years start on their 18th birthday. Accidents in the Republic usually have a shorter, two-year limit.
No. There are no upfront fees. If your claim succeeds, the other side pays your legal costs and you keep 100% of your compensation. If it doesn't, our legal insurance covers the costs. Read how funding works.
